Thoughts on the loss of a beloved dog

I had a phone call today from a lady whose very dear dog “Bella” passed away recently. I thought I would share her thoughts because this is a sadness I often hear and is a common experience.

Bella seemed to be her best friend and she misses her terribly. She said “I now talk to myself”, for example saying at 6pm “…its time for your dinner Bella..” . She said she “just can’t get used to being alone; I miss her so much”. Her Bella was about 10 years old which is around 70 in dog years, so that is quite a good age for a Cavoodle, but that does not make her loss any easier.

Generally most large dogs do not have a long life span and smaller dogs such as Cavoodles and Poodles tend to live longer, often up to 15 years or more. It is a fact that humans may outlive several of our loved dogs in a lifetime.

It is heart-breaking to have a dog pass away at any age, and I have experienced this a few times and know well the pain and sense of loss. You can cherish your memories and maybe look forward to a new puppy, watch him or her grow, and develop another special bond with a new friend. As a Cavoodle breeder in Victoria, I truly understand how this renewal cycle can work and how much love a little dog can bring to one’s life.
